Visual assessment of the body can provide a quick insight into nutrition status.  When looking at the right areas of the body, the health care provider can quickly see areas of muscle tissue wasting and malnutrition.

 

Muscle tissue loss in upper body is more suggestive of malnutrition; loss of muscle tissue in lower body is more suggestive of inactivity or bed rest.
