Concern about medication side effects remains a powerful barrier.  Older adults have a greater risk for adverse reactions as they tend to use more medications.  Because of metabolic changes, the elderly are more likely to experience side effects from many drugs, and dosages may require more delicate adjustment. Older adults often suffer increased side effects related to lack the ability to eliminate medications from their system as efficiently as younger persons. Unfortunately, individuals choose not to adhere to medications if they have no control over how they feel.  Specifically assessing for medication side effects, suggesting ways to manage minor side effects, and identifying alternative medications with fewer side effects are strategies that can reduce non-adherence.
