First, some terminology, adherence is the process in which a person follows rules, guidelines, or standards, especially as patients follow a prescription and recommendations for a regimen of care such as taking medications.  However, it is the philosophy of the authors that care should be patient centered. Using a patient centered approach to care, it is assumed that care regime goals have been established in partnership with the patient. As such, the patient’s adherence to the medication regime reflects a portion of the self-management that the patient engages in to control the chronic condition.
