The temples of Aesculapius were funded by donations, but these were not entirely voluntary.  In evidence of this there are tablets which were found at the temple at Epidauros that described relapses and therapeutic failures in patients who had neglected to bring a sufficient offering, or who had otherwise shown a lack of faith.
