Hieroglyphics had long been known in the West, but Western scholars had lacked the key to their translation until the discovery, in 1799, of the now famous Rosetta Stone during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign.  The comparison of the hieroglyphics, demonic and Greek scripts on this stone lead to what is now the established science of Egyptology, upon which our knowledge of Egyptian medicine is based.
