Opening up Medical Journals for free to internet users from developing countries is a new initiative by the BMJ Group to close the digital divide. The software (Digital Island) recognises the origin of the internet user and gives him free access if he/she logs in from a developing country. Similar initiatives by other publishers are expected to follow.
