Autogenous vaccine have had variable success in the past; which is now understood in the light of the various strains of the viruses and the variable expression of viral proteins. Current experimental vaccines using expression of E7 or L2 genes in vaccinia vectors have been shown to protect against homologous virus challenge [3]. This work has as much relevance to humans, where melanomas and cervical cancers, as well as ordinary papillomas, are associated with papillomaviruses.
