Important pioneering work was made with these viruses at Glasgow Veterinary School. Six different viruses can be distinguished by RE patterns and by neutralisation assays. They fall into two groups.

Group A - cause fibropapillomas and usually do not yield infectious virus.

Group B -Cause epithelial papillomas from which infectious virus can be recovered.
