Most poxviruses grow in host cell lines and on the external surface of chick chorioallantoic membrane in-ovo, (ectoderm for pox compared to endoderm for myxoviruses), where they produce nodular lesions, "pocks". Infected cells enlarge with vesicles and very large eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (ballooning).
