The number of
subtypes in each serotype is at least 3. Subtypes are the major problem in vaccine selection because vaccinal antibodies to one subtype do not neutralise a second. Subtypes are now defined by blocking ELISA's and sequencing. In this way Pirbright can quickly match up new isolates with the best old vaccine e.g. Manisa O with Pan Asia O now in the UK. |
