A glutaraldehyde inactivated whole cell vaccine with QuillA has been developed by the Institute for Animal health but in common with more traditional vaccines Tc immunity against RSV-infected cells has been difficult to effect without the risk of immune complex disease exacerbating disease. It is for this reason that no licenses for human RSV are licensed. An early formalin-inactivated vaccine for human use caused T-cell-mediated interstitial pneumonia as well as the usual bronchiolitis to develop during disease.
Therapy, infected babies are placed in head tents and given aerosol ribavirin.
