The metabolic consequences of impaired insulin secretion and insulin action feed back and influence levels of blood glucose and fatty acid.  In turn, these changes feed back and exert adverse effects on both insulin secretion and insulin action.  This complexity has made it extremely difficult to establish direct links between the metabolic changes and the genes that control theses processes.
