During the first week nasal swabs can be cultured on feline cells to produce syncytia and intranuclear inclusions, but not many labs are equipped to do this.

Several vaccines are available including killed and live attenuated preparations. Some of the live vaccines are given intranasally and may provoke clinical symptoms eg in immunosuppressed kittens with FIV or FeLV.
