The syndrome of fading puppies and post-mortems with wide spread petechiae and intranuclear inclusion bodies are highly suggestive. There are not any commercial vaccines as the condition is rare and maternal antibodies are relatively transient ie bosters 2w before whelping.

In adult dogs CHV-1 can be isolated from the upper respiratory tract. To what extent it is associated with kennl cough is under research at the RVC

It also infects the genital tract and infertility and abortion have been reported. It suggested that kennels control the disease in future by monitoring using PCR and then vaccinating once infected.
