Ascorbic acid and selenium are required and are mobilized when fish are stressed, with resultant elevated levels of GTPX formed to protect against rupture of the fragile lipoprotein components of the cell membranes.  These are especially friable in gill and liver tissue, which are separated from blood and environments by thin bi-layors.
