There are three main tools for presenting numeric information: Prose, tables, and charts. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Prose is the best way to explain the purpose and interpretation of numeric information. However, sentences are a very inefficient way to organize a lot of numbers because the words get in the way.
Tables and charts are both good ways to organize a lot of numbers in a predictable structure. Tables are preferred when precise values are needed, but less effective for showing the shape of a pattern. Charts are good for showing the shape of a pattern (direction & magnitude) but not for reporting detailed numeric values.
