Administrative data have some advantages over traditional surveillance data sources. Accordingly, there has been substantial research on using these data for surveillance and health outcome studies (Blanchard et al., 1996; Maskarinec, 1997; Cricelli et al., 2003).

 

However, because administrative data have not been collected for purposes of research or surveillance, there is a need to ensure that they are valid and reliable.
