The old studies did not estimate mortality from FH accurately as a result of selection on cardiovascular disease: about 40% of the untreated FH patients reach a normal life span. Moreover, the SMR was normal in the 19th century and rose with a peak in the 1930s to 1960s. Hypercholesterolemia probably enhances the effect of other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
