Vascular permeability in dengue infections is an efferent phenomenon secondary to T cell attack on dengue virus-infected cells. This activates complement and generates a cytokine “perfect storm” that correlate with disease severity. An increased dengue-infected cell mass correlates with T cell response and cytokine production (Pang T et al. Immunol Cell Biol 85: 43-5, 2007)
