In 1953, all the major tobacco manufacturers met and decided upon a strategy to stay in business despite the catastrophic health effects caused by their products. That strategy turned out to be based on 50 years of dishonesty and deceit, causing the premature deaths of millions of Americans, and many more throughout the world. Now it is time for the industry to meet and decide to end the practice of selling needlessly harmful products. There should be announcement that the industry intends to collaborate with regulators to gradually phase out the sale of smoked products over 10 years and replace these with low-toxicity smoke-free tobacco products.
