Another subtle but perhaps even more pressing issue is the concern over bioaccumulation of POCs in humans, which can lead to further alarming health consequences. Concerns over such a bioaccumulation effect can be justified with a clarification of its process and related issues, followed by a numerical analogy. First of all, by definition bioaccumulation refers to both cumulative exposure to multiple chemicals sharing the same mechanism of toxicity, and aggregate exposure to the same chemical during the same study interval. Secondly, fish and shellfish are not a person’s only source of exposure to the same or to a similar POC, which due to its great lipophilicity tends to concentrate and stay in the person’s fatty tissues for a long time.
