Part I deals mainly with the tolerance levels of POCs in fish and with the fish consumption patterns observed in some localities. These two issues are important in that the use of a tolerance level or a similar index is needed (directly or indirectly) in assessing the health risk of any contaminant. Also, such an acceptable (a safe) residue level cannot be determined without some appreciation of the exposure (fish consumption) patterns involved. As a continuation of Part I, the learning objectives of this second half are as follows: (1) to appreciate the POC levels in fish observed in various localities; (2) to compare these residue levels to the screening values (threshold levels); and (3) to revisit the basic strategies or approaches used for preventing the health risk from fish contamination with POCs.
