This proposed ideotype became the “New Plant Type” (NPT) highlighted in IRRI’s strategic plan (IRRI 1989) and breeding efforts to develop NPT were initiated in 1990. The objective was to develop improved germplasm with 15-20% higher yield than the existing high yielding varieties. Numerous breeding lines with desired ideotype were developed (Khush 1995) and shared with the national rice improvement programs. Three NPT lines have been released in China and two in Indonesia. Other NARS are evaluating and further improving NPT lines.
