Insulin resistance is a primary defect in type 2 diabetes. As reported in a recent study by Haffner and colleagues, 92% of patients with type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance. It can be defined as an impaired response to the physiological effects of insulin, including those on glucose, lipid, and protein metabolism, and the effects on vascular endothelial function.
