This year the Retreat occurs as—at a very important milestone for NCI, its 70th anniversary. In 1937, President Roosevelt signed the National Cancer Institute Act, which established NCI as the first of the categorical institutes at NIH. Now I mention this fact since Al is the unofficial historian of NCI. Although he had not yet arrived when this sign appeared in a rustic setting off Rockville Pike, leading to Building 6, which still stands just east of Building 31 and was the first home of NCI and its intramural program.
