In a book published in 1972, Archie Cochrane, a British epidemiologist, drew attention to the great ignorance about the effects of health care. He emphasized that reviews of research evidence must be prepared systematically and they must be up-dated to apply new evidence. This is the mission of the Cochrane Collaboration that involves 14 centres around the world.
