During the 1905 revolution, community physicians challenged both the political legitimacy of the tsarist regime and the professional dominance of the St. Petersburg medical establishment. No longer were they willing to play the subordinate role to which they had been condemned by the laws, political customs, and political structure of tsarist Russia.
