POPULIS relies upon the information provided by administrative databases. Although Manitoba is “information-rich”, many of the databases also available in
other Canadian provinces, many U.S. states, and in most European countries. Manitoba’s database documents essentially every contact the population has with the health care system.

This figure presents a view of an ideal administrative database with a population-based research registry playing a central role. The registry contains a unique but non-identifying (encrypted) research number assigned to each provincial resident, together with information about demographic characteristics, residence and family composition.

Note: no personal information such as name, address, or PHIN is contained in the registry.

The other files use the same number to track use of services, making it possible to compile comprehensive histories for individuals over time.
