A region-wide integration of a dengue surveillance and control program can bring countries together to address cross-border dimensions of natural disaster mitigation and hurricane reconstruction. A regional approach could streamline cross-border dengue surveillance to provide an early warning capability permitting emergency mosquito control measures to be implemented and major epidemics to be averted following a hurricane. It can help to strengthen transnational linkages, particularly as it relates to information exchange. Lessons learned in one country can be shared across the region, thereby, helping to reduce redundancy. A regional approach not only reduces redundancy but emphasizes the fundamental need to mitigate disasters and create healthier communities.
