Two presumptions are made on backcrossing influences. The short 21-24 mm rachis comes from low watertable sites, and all 2 PR (2 pairs of raches) influence comes from northern velutine derivatives. Neither foliar influence seem to have been in the area 50 years ago, nor is such influence in Navajoa now. The genetics and the ecology go hand in hand.
