Addiction usually begins in adolescence, making early prevention critically important. This slide illustrates the age at which drug dependence is first diagnosed, and shows that for tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, it is typically in adolesence or early adulthood. Much of NIDA’s portfolio is aimed at preventing drug use from ever starting. This includes devising effective messages that “speak” to young people.
