They are interrupted by noncoding segments of DNA called internal eliminated segments or IESs. A gene can have say 6 IESs, which would divide the gene into 7 segments, known as macronuclear destined segments or MDSs. During the conversion of MI to MA, all these IESs are eliminated, and the MDSs are rearranged and bound together.
