In study of Haffner et al, 1998 life expectancy has been compared between non-diabetic subjects without and with previous coronary heart disease and diabetic subjects with and without previous myocardial infarction. It was 8 years of follow up. If diabetic subjects already had myocardial infarction then life expectancy is only around 50%. So, diabetes is a risk factor, at least at this population.
