It is a comparison of diabetic and nondiabetic subjects in the SHEP study. Major coronary heart disease events were reduced in non-diabetic subjects by 19% as a result of blood pressure lowering with chlorthalidone and atenolol. In diabetic patients was 56% reduction in major coronary heart disease events with this level of blood pressure lowering. The benefits of tight blood pressure control are more dramatic that might be expected.
