While for many years alcoholism treatment approaches relied almost exclusively on behavioral therapy, efforts to develop medications for alcohol use disorders have expanded rapidly in recent years. Three agents are now approved for use in the United States and many other countries. As is the case with medications for other chronic diseases, these medications have been found to be highly effective with some patients but others have failed to respond to them.
