Thus one might expect a synergism between diabetes and hypertension in increasing cardiovascular risk, and this is indeed something strongly suggested by the data of the UK Prospective Diabetes Study, in which subjects in the top quartile of haemoglobin A1C and of systolic blood pressure had a hazard ratio of around 6-fold for mycardial infarction.
