Parental recall for vaccinations is notoriously poor – parents have been shown to under and over estimate vaccine coverage for their children. Consequently, it is important to use immunization cards, medical records or other documentation from health care providers when measuring immunization coverage.

The age at which coverage is measured varies, typically 12, 24 or 36 months or age ranges such as children 19-35 months.
