The following three articles are the focus of this lecture:

 

First, Quan et al. in their article, Coding algorithms for defining comorbidities in ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 administrative data, did extensive work around the translation of the Charlson and Elixhauser comorbidity indices into ICD-10.

 

Second, Halfon et al. in their article, Measuring potentially avoidable hospital readmissions, developed ICD-10 codes for complications most likely to lead to avoidable readmissions.

 

Lastly and briefly, Kokotailo et al. in their article, Coding of Stroke and Stroke Risk Factors Using International Classification of Disease, Revisions 9 and 10, do a careful comparison and validation of the stroke and stroke risk factors ICD-9 and 10 code performance in Calgary’s hospitals.
