Knowledge of the prevalence of diabetes in populations is essential for rational planning of health services, identification of high-risk communities assessment of secular trends, and as a foundation for etiological research. For diabetes in adults, which may often remain asymptomatic and undetected in routine clinical practice, only such surveys can reveal the true frequency of the disease.
