Position and head alignment: check and maintain head position throughout entire meal. Stop meal and add physical supports if necessary to finish meal. If self-feeding, remind the child throughout the meal to maintain good positioning.

Presentation of food: keep in mind good presentation techniques (examples: appropriate bite, size, speed of presentation, wait for swallow)

Mealtime problems: be familiar with child’s mealtime problems such as hyperextension, tongue thrust, vocalizations. May have to demonstrate hyperextension and tongue thrust.

When to offer food: offer when child is ready (not laughing, crying, vocalizing, coughing, choking or refusing food).

Dangerous situations: feeding the child a small amount of food and not monitoring the swallow, sudden loud noises, etc.
