Take a bite of the chewy food and watch your neighbor. What part do you visibly see as working the hardest? Pay close attention to the cheek muscles. How hard are they working. What is their function? (To keep the food out of the sulci or outsides of the teeth)

Many people do not realize how important the cheeks can be in the swallowing process. If the cheek muscles are weak or do not move properly, it is harder to control food in the mouth, and especially harder to control food that requires chewing or a lot of “processing” before being swallowed.
