As case control design is usually applied for rare diseases, incidence (proportion “a” in the table) will be negligible.

Hence, Odd’s ratio which indicates the odds i.e. the number of times an event (disease) can occur (+ve odds) versus number of times it cannot occur (-ve odds) will be useful in these circumstances in the place of RR.
