Epidemic is due to
serotype “A” meningocooci. For chemoprophylaxis, we used silphadiazine,100mg/kg body weight /per day in two divided doses for four days in children and 1 gm 12th hourly for 4 days in adult. Unfortunately the protection offered disappeared immediately after the drugs are discontinued. Prolonged use is forbidden due to their side effects Rifampicin is not advocated then.
