A final strong enemy of federally funded health insurance was the group of private insurance companies, which stood to loose much of their lucrative business if the government became actively involved in their field. Several of the larger insurance companies pooled their resources to create the Insurance Economics Society of America, whose main goal was to block passage of any and all health insurance legislation.
