Flexor spasms may be common. Appendicular flexor muscles, abdominal muscles and the cervical musculature are often involved. Sometimes the masseter, temporalis and periorbital muscles are affected.

Acute optic neuritis, typically accompanied by dilated unrespons-ive pupils, may be the only sign of CD.

CDV is a common cause of convulsions. Cell-mediated immunosuppression can also occur, predisposing hosts to other infectious agents.
