In 1992-94, about 25 % of 4,000 lions in the Serengeti park in Tanzania died of CDV that had passed from dogs to jackals to lions that had no previous immunologic history. Of course, immunoglobin--maternal antibodies--in lions was then passed on to the offspring.

Urban CDV can be eradicated if everyone vaccinates their puppies starting at perhaps 6 weeks old. The presence of CDV in wild animal populations like raccoons remains
problematic, true also for rabies.
