In general terms, the causes of travelers’ diarrhea are bacterial (up to 50% or more), viral, parasitic and occasionally biological toxins or even fungal agents. By far, the most common etiological agent identified in travelers’ diarrhea is enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), which has been found to be responsible for 40-75% of cases.
