Let me tell you a story of one of my students, six foot four inches tall, who was afraid to go through the poor parts of town. I refused to let him stay in the class unless he did so. He reluctantly, put on his gym clothes, saying he could outrun anyone. He ran until a little boy, who asked, “Do you play basketball man?” He answered yes, and began to play. He was introduced to family, taken into house, met the local drug dealers, viewed all the stores. He came back, and said,” I was so lucky. I found the only safe place in Oakland.” I sent him out again. He now works, full time, in his favorite city, Oakland.
