The initial START triage scheme utilized capillary refill as a surrogate for circulatory status, but a later revision demonstrated better specificity (negative in health) when utilizing radial pulse as the perfusion indicator. Some schools  believe that the absence of a radial pulse in an adult roughly correlated with a systolic blood pressure less than 80 mm Hg.
