In Japan, free or almost free provision of extended health care further than in the US system or even the UK system. Health care is relatively cheap consuming only about 7 % of GDP as compared with 14 % in the US and 10% on average in some developed countries.

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has stated, "We are at the Door to the Super Aged Society. By the middle of the 21st Century every 1/3 Japanese people is expected to reach 65 years old or older. We aim at making this super aged society that no other country in the world had experienced a society where all people can live healthy life comfortably with peace in mind."
